Become a Referee

Looking to join us as a referee?

We welcome people of all genders, 18+ who are interested in becoming a referee. This is a great way to become involved in the sport and increase your fitness on skates, whilst avoiding contact.

Trainee referees join the league as ‘Hatchlings’ and complete the training programme.

Once trainee referees complete their basic skating skills they also shadow our referees to start learning referee skills and the rules of roller derby.

Contact us for a Hatchling information pack and the start date of the next intake.

FAQ

How often do we train?
New skaters and trainee referees train once a week on:
Saturdays, 9am – 11am.

Once you’ve you passed minimum skills you will train at the following times:

Wednesday skills training with B Team – 8pm – 10pm
Saturday scrim, 9am – 11am

A Team skaters train:

Thursday 8-10pm

All sessions take place at Greenbank Sports Academy, Greenbank Lane, Liverpool, L17 1AG
What equipment will I need?
To play roller derby you will need:

quad skates
a skate helmet
knee pads
elbow pads
wrist guards
mouth guard

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything, you can borrow some kit. Just let us know what you need when you apply.

Roller derby is a full contact sport so good quality safety kit is a must. Even if you are on a budget, a minimum set up of elbow, knee and wrist guards are required. If you arrive at a training session with kit that does not meet our minimum safety requirements, you will not be able to skate.
How much does it cost?
As we are a skater owned and skater run team, we have to charge fees in order to cover hall hire costs, insurance and keep the league running.

New skaters pay monthly membership fee of £25 and more information about this will be provided at the beginning of ‘hatchlings’ training.
What does training involve?
During our ‘Hatchlings’ programme for new skaters we will teach you all you need to know about roller derby and all the skills needed to pass the WFTDA ‘minimum skills’ test. While the initial training programme is 12 weeks, you can learn at your own pace and can take as long as you need to master the required minimum skills.

This will cover:

Basic skating for roller derby: derby form, stops and falls.

Contact: blocking, jamming and more!
Rules and strategy: stuff you will need to know in order to be able to scrimmage.

Once you have passed your minimum skills test you will move to training sessions on a Wednesday. Once you are assessed to be safe to ‘scrimmage’ (practise game-play) you can join ‘Birds’ on Saturdays. You can then focus on progressing towards playing roller derby games in public.
How can I join?
We run new intakes every few months.

Email hatchlings@liverpoolrollerbirds.co.uk to find out when the next intake is scheduled, or let us know if you're interested in joining.

It’s also worth keeping an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for updates on our next intake.

We encourage all potential members to attend our games and events to learn more about the sport and the team – you may also pick up some of the rules along the way!

If you can’t wait to get involved, you could consider joining us as an NSO (Non-Skating Official) member.
Can I transfer?
We consider transfers from other leagues of post-minimum skaters on a case-by-case basis; please get in touch with us for more information.
