Samaritans #WeListen campaign:
Life was already sometimes hard, but the last 16 months have been difficult for everyone in different ways and that’s why it is even more important that we check in with our friends, families, colleagues or open up ourselves. Talk, listen, check in. Don't feel alone in this big old crazy world. Here at LRB we are a safe space for anyone that needs to talk and being back and able to skate with friends again has been both amazing and therapeutic but we want to highlight the Samaritans awareness campaign, the Big Listen, this month. They are there 24/7, 365 days of the year, for free by calling 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.org. Save their number or email for yourself or for someone you know.

“I first started skating with the founding members Mal and Mickey and disco, we initially trained with rainy to pass our mins due to no league and no venue. I was with the birds for a few years the last bout was 2013 i think! Memory is bad....Left for surgury and took some time to recover. I want a last skate - given my age probably the last try!

“I've been skating on and off for about 10 months, I wanted to start roller derby as it's a sport I think I'd really enjoy. I'm hoping to meet other women in Merseyside who love skating with LRB and make some friends 🙂”

Meet Diva….. “I skated as a kid and got back

Meet Diva…..

“I skated as a kid and got back into it in 2020. I have wanted to join LRB for years but as a performer I was never around to train, so jumped at the chance to do it now. I am 50 and have MS and am probably the fittest I have been in my life due to lockdown. So I hope can become a better skater and make the LRB girls proud.”

Meet Liz:

“Who hasn’t watched Whip It and wanted to join a roller derby team?? Seriously though!! I saw this film ages ago and wanted to give it a go but life got in the way. Lockdown gave me time and inspired me to try new things now I make time for it. It’s always been a goal to play derby and I can’t say I wasn’t scared to begin with but I found a team and joined LRB as a Hatchie a couple of weeks ago. Bambi on ice to begin with but levelling up each time I lace up my skates. I’m love the culture of this team, everyone is welcome and there is no judgement. You can just be yourself. The coaches are clear, encouraging and understand everyone has their own style of learning. So now I’m working towards developing my skills and am aiming for the A team!”

This week we’re introducing you to some of our newest Birds. We recently re-opened our Hatchling programme and have had an amazing number of new skaters through our doors. Watch this space because they’ll be on track doing the Derby in no time at all!

Meet Krystina……
“I have wanted to learn how to skate for years and this year finally decided to go for it, buying my first skates in April.

I was highly recommended roller derby by a former player and began to do some research. As soon as I saw that the Liverpool Roller Birds had a Hatchlings programme, I had to apply to join!

Since I am new to skating, my goal right now is to improve my skating skills and increase my confidence. I'm excited about joining a brilliant community and challenging myself to see how far I can go.”
